Privacy Policy

Last updated: draft, not yet published

This page is a working draft describing UYE's actual current behavior. It is pending review by qualified legal counsel before it is treated as UYE's binding privacy policy. Nothing here should be read as a final legal commitment until that review is complete.

What UYE is

UYE is a private, invitation-based network for preserving family history: people, relationships, photographs, documents, and stories. Heritage Spaces are private by default. Nothing you add becomes visible to anyone outside a Heritage Space or Circle you explicitly share it with.

What we collect

Account information: your email address and display name, used to sign you in and identify your contributions to a Heritage Space.

Content you provide: names, dates, relationships, stories, and any photographs or documents you or your collaborators upload.

Usage data needed to operate the service: authentication sessions and basic request logs. UYE does not run third-party advertising or analytics trackers on this site.

Face-matching assistance

When you upload photographs, UYE can compute a mathematical face-similarity signature for detected faces, used only to suggest — never to decide — that two photographs may show the same person.

These suggestions are evidence for a human reviewer only. UYE never automatically assigns a face to a person's identity, never automatically merges two people, and never changes who can see a photograph based on a face match. Every identity assignment requires an explicit decision by a person with permission in that Heritage Space.

Face-similarity signatures are stored only within the Heritage Space the photograph belongs to, and are never shared across unrelated Heritage Spaces or used to search for a person outside a space they've been added to.

Retention

Content you add stays until you or a space steward removes it, or until an account deletion request is processed as described below.

REQUIRED POLICY DECISION: UYE does not yet define a fixed retention schedule for face-similarity signatures, deleted content, or backups independent of the underlying record's deletion. This needs an explicit decision from the UYE team and legal counsel before this policy can state a firm retention period.

Your controls

You can request an export of your account data, and you can request deletion of your account, at any time from the Privacy Center in Settings. Neither of these controls is ever paywalled or limited to a paid plan.

If you solely own a Heritage Space that other people belong to, or that holds content, account deletion is blocked until that space is transferred or resolved — this protects shared family history from being deleted by one person's account closure.

Payment failure never deletes your history

If a subscription payment fails or lapses, your existing Heritage Spaces, people, photographs, and stories are never deleted. Your account may be limited from creating new content until payment recovers or you return to a free plan, but nothing already preserved is removed for a billing reason.

Who can see what

Access to a Heritage Space is governed by membership; access to shared material beyond a space is governed by Circles you explicitly create. UYE does not make any family content public, and does not infer sharing from family relationships alone.

Cookies and tracking

UYE uses one essential session cookie to keep you signed in, and stores your language preference in your browser's local storage. There is no third-party advertising or analytics tracking on this site today, which is why no cookie-consent banner is currently shown — if that changes, this policy and the site's consent flow will change first.
